Love is in the air. And I’m not just saying that because Valentine’s Day is around the corner. It just so happens that one of the most popular love operas ever written is in town this week! La Boheme!
This story takes place in Paris and focuses on the love between a seamstress called Mimi and a poet Rodolfo. They fall in love right from the start, but because of Mimi’s flirtatious behavior, Rodolfo wants to leave her. I really don’t want to spoil the ending so I won’t tell you anymore about the plot.
The French word bohemian was used to refer to gypsies based on a falsehood that they were from bohemia. As with many trends in society, the connotation of ‘gypsy’ became aligned with the counter-culture of young artists and other rebels in 19th century Paris.
Interestingly, when the Westfield Style Tour came through town a couple months ago, I was profiled as "Modern Boho". Do you know that I actually have gypsy blood in me? It runs deep from my grandmother who descends from Romania. But that said, Wikipedia describes it as: “In modern usage, the term bohemian no longer refers to the Roma but can describe any person who lives an unconventional artistic life, where self-expression is their highest value; art (acting, poetry, writing, singing, dancing, painting, etc.) is a serious, if not central, part of their life.”
My personal favorite quote to describe ‘modern boho’ would be that of Holly Beckerfrom Décor 8…
“Boho Modern feminine with an edge. It’s deeply personal. Mixing periods and ethnic styles is highly encouraged. Color can be subdued, rich, bold, or barely there. It can be neat with few objects or items arranged in collections, or a bit disheveled. Traditional design “rules” are thrown out the window, replaced by a casual beauty that comes from the heart. It’s all about textures and details. It’s about living a more creative life and decorating from the heart.”
One of the most known celebrities who rock boho with style can be seen with Nicole Richie. She always seems so natural, feminine, comfortable, but stylish. Check out the picture up top of two new spring dresses. The white tunic dress is $68.00 from our local north county boutique Mog & Rue. The blue maxi dress is new from Forever 21 and costs $33.00. I’m absolutely gaga over Mog & Rue’s new spring dresses...
With that said, time for me to go shopping! Please check out the AMAZING show and costumes in La Boheme, playing at the San Diego Opera on various dates through February 7, 2010.
